Post Blinking cursor when try to boot from WinToFlash
I have a problem with the USB WIN XP PRO bootable drive I created with WinToFlash.

My Dell Vostro 1500 will not boot from the USB drive – I just get a blinking cursor in the top left hand part of the screen.

I have to power OFF to regain control of the computer.

Here are the steps I performed:

1. XP PRO install CD ---- I know the install CD is “good” because I can put in the CD drive of a different computer, I tried a desk top and a Laptop, and the computer boots from the CD to the WIN XP PRO set up screen.
2. Use WinToFlash program to transfer setup CD to a 2Gbit, USB 2 drive. Program finishes with no problems. Using Explorer, I can see the menu of the newly created USB drive has the WIN directories.
3. Place new USB drive in Vostro computer
4. Power ON, and tap F12 key to bring up boot menu.
5. Select to boot from “USB Drive”, and press ENTER key
6. Screen changes from boot menu to blinking cursor in upper left hand portion of screen.
7. Computer does not boot, keyboard and mouse do not respond. Need to press and hold Power OFF button to turn off computer.
8. Leave USB drive in place, turn computer ON and computer boots normally from hard drive to XP desk top.

What do I need to do to get computer to boot from USB drive?

Thank you,

Good day!

Did you use only Wizard in WinToFlash or you tried to tune the transfer?

I used only the Wizard. Did not try the Advanced features. If "tuning " will help I will give it a try. Any suggestions on how to "tune" ?

Thanks for your response!

Turn the advanced mode on, crate Windows XP/2003 transfer job, on Format tab select different file systems, FAT16 CHS is the first, and try again.

Support:
I followed your instructions:
Turn the advanced mode on, crate Windows XP/2003 transfer job, on Format tab select different file systems, FAT16 CHS is the first, and try again.
This time, when I boot I receive the message:
"Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to continue"

I remove the thumb drive, press a key and the computer boots normally to Win XP PRO

Shut down, replaced thumb drive, and boot. Get same message, this time LEAVE thumb drive in place and press a key.

Same results, computer boots normally to WIN XP PRO

So,WinToFlash is still not working.

What is the next thing to try?

Has anyone been able to get WinToFlash to boot?

Thanks

First of all this is not WinToFlash problem, this is motherboard's BIOS problem. Try to set USB drive type in BIOS Setup to USB-HDD.

Support,

I have selected "boot from USB" as the first boot selection in the BIOS.

I re state my question to:

Has anyone using a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop, been able to get WinToFlash to boot?

Hi.

I'm trying to use a wintoflash usb drive to reload an MSI Wind U20, and am having this exact same problem.

I'm sure that I'm booting from the drive in question.

WintoFlash loaded the usb drive with 2 files and a config settings file called "boot".

Looking forward to this one getting resolved.

Try formatting the USb pen with RMPrepUSb and use the Boot as HDD (2PTNS) option. Then use WinToFlash (without reformatting).

steve6375,

Thanks for the tip. You mentioned :Try formatting the USb pen with RMPrepUSb and use the Boot as HDD (2PTNS) option. Then use WinToFlash (without reformatting).

Are these items on the WinToFlash program? I did not see the options. Where are they located? Would like to give them a try.

Thanks

steve6375,

I have questions regarding the RMPrepusb, do I have to tune any from it? or just ticking the boot as HDD then prepare drive.
I am confuse of many selections there.
thanks.

Steps are numbered 1-6, Help is in help box - just hover cursor over each item/button.

Select Boot as HDD 2PTNS is fine - you could also select 64hds/32sectors if USb is smaller than 2GB - just try a few options....

If you are installing XP, then tick the XP option. If Win 7 or Vista then tick the Win7/Vista option. Try NTFS first as should be fastest.

Change option in WinToFLash to not format - Advanced - Process Steps and untick Format drive - see picture in previous post!
