If you're getting a STOP error 0x7B during text-mode setup of XP, try replacing the ntdetect.com file with this one.

If that doesn't fix it you can try changing the hard drive setting in BIOS or try integrating SATA drivers.

Any feedback is more than welcome.

Mike,

THANK YOU!

Your replacement file fixed this problem for my Dell GX360 desktops. Will be trying it on other model Dells in the coming months.

What is modified?

Hola

You're welcome jfunk, I'm glad it worked for you.
The modified ntdetect.com resolves problems with some buggy BIOSes, when USB bus is reset and USB peripherals re-enumerated.
Many Dells have this problem, my Dell Dimension 4700 desktop did, but it's not only Dells that have this problem. Also, I think thewilon is wrong.

I also have a blue screen of death, but mine says STOP: 0x000000ED at the bottom. Will the same solution solve my problem?

Hi,
I know the BSOD STOP "7B" error can be caused by a million things.
Having said that, I am doing some migrations (from one SAN to another) and some of the systems will just keep crashing during boot and throwing this error. The HBAs are mostly Emulex.
I am thinking of replacing the NTDETECT.COM on the problematic servers (Windows 2003 SP2) with your file - or can you modify the NTDETECT.COM for Windows 2003 server SP2 the same way as you modified the attached and post it please?
I think Windows XP and Server 2003 share quite a large part of their code base right?
I will try it first in a VM and see if a regular server 2003 boots after the replacement.

Thanks

I solved this problem by changing the SATA drive READ setup to IDE for the installation

Enter your bios setup - naviage to the drive setups and change your drive that you are going to install to IDE rather and SATA (assuming you have a sata drive)
Worked for me as soon as I did it

I am installing winxp to a acer ASPIRE ONE onto my new SSD.
Only thing I can say is that the install process from USB to the SSD is .... SSSLLLLOOOOWWWW

Hope this helps

I installed the new ntdetect file but still got the blue screen of death. The other suggestion to change the bios HDD SATA drive information did work. I was installing on a toshiba netbook 205. Its HDD drive setting was changed to COMPATABILITY (there was no IDE option directly) and on reboot the install proceeded past the BSoD error.

System is a 2004ish Dell Dimension 2400 Pentium 4, 40gb HDD.

Basically its my Gramps Computer (email and light browsing) and one day it starts to hang on mup.sys, I start last known good settings and all seems great but when I restart its hangs again. Found out afterwards I should have gone to an earlier restore point once the computer started. Bad news is the CD Drive crapped out 2 years ago and while switching it out I ripped one of the pins on the MOBO. So only option was USB. Couldn't use CMD to create a bootable USB so I did some research (google) and found wintoflash. It didnt work and I spent so much time trying to figure out why I was getting the blue screen and then I found this thread (tons of time formatting and changing setting and blah blah blah violin starts to play) That stupid NDetect file was fucking everything up. Sorry about the language. Please remember that you have to use WINRAR to extract the file and then add it to your USB. Nice software I wonder if my gramps will give me the new computer he was already committed to buying...haha yeah right

This worked for me on my Asus EEE 1005HAB using an iPod (5th gen?) as the USB device, to get past the blue screen that happened when the set-up was starting windows.

You can fix these problem by following steps-

which had the following steps;

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

This fixed the problem and I was able to do this from the "safe" mode.
