Post NTLDR is Missing with seperate System and Boot partitions
Hi there

I have a slightly weird problem after completing the steps below:

1. New netbook with Windows 7 and 4 partitions Recovery, 100MB System, C:\150GB, E:\50GB
2. After some reading I determined that the 100MB partition was for Windows 7 recovery
3. Rebooted into XP setup from USB drive generated with WinToFlash all OK
4. Deleted partition D and E
5. Created new partition D:
6. Ran through XP setup using steps from boot.ini of 1 then 2 then 4
7. Setup completed and logged in OK all good
8. Upon reboot system wouldnt start without USB key and selection of option 4
9. Checking Disk Management I found I had drive 100MB as System and Drive C:\ 150GB as Boot
10. As this didnt look right (Shouldnt System and Boot be same drive?) I decided to re-run XP setup using USB drive
11. Rebooted went to USB menu selected step 1 as for point 6 above and received "NTLDR is missing"

This confused me so I tried a few things as below:
1. Booted into XP and copied NTLDR and other files in root of C: so both C: and D: drives had same files - NTLDR still missing
2. Restored system to original Windows 7 backup and tried again - NTLDR still missing

This is weird as I expected after system restore I would be able to repeat XP setup as for steps 1 - 11.

Im now re-creating the USB image using WinToFlash and will try using the new image to see what happens.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what my problem might be? Have I messed up partitions somehow?

Any comments or suggestions much appreciated as Im a bit confused right now.

Cheers
Justin

Post Re: NTLDR is Missing with seperate System and Boot partitions
UPDATE - After re-running WinToFlash onto the USB stick I have successfully re-partitioned and got XP running.

Its strange that Win2Flash doesnt work twice in a row and what put me onto this was a comment in another thread here viewtopic.php?f=10&t=278. Ive asked in this thread if its possible to get details of what is changed between installs so if you are interested check the link.

Cheers
Justin

Windows Setup program deletes file you need to use USB drive more than 1 time. Advicecan be found here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=315

About boot loader - you have to fix this manually. 1st, use Windows XP recovery console to fix XP boot loaders, than start Win7 auto recovery. Note: fix XP first, because it uses old boot loader (ntldr), Win7 uses new bootmgr.
